I need to know what we are legally allowed and legally required to disclose about who works for the company.

A little background - we have over 200 employees, most of whom work in production. They don't need a phone to do their job and do not have access to one. We get a lot of calls for these employees. The callers usually won't state what the call is regarding other than "a business matter." I'm worried that these callers are trying to get information about our employees - like if they are still employed, are they at work now, ect. Some of the callers are quite agressive.

Are there any laws about releasing information about employees? If someone does call for employment verification, what information should we get from the requestor before releasing any information?
